How to Apply

1. Apply to the Canada Greener Homes Grant

You cannot access the Canada Greener Homes Loan without first applying for the Canada Greener Homes Grant. (Likewise, you cannot get the pre and post-retrofit evaluations without applying for the Canada Greener Homes Grant and having an application number!)

2. Get a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

When you apply, you’ll will be given the chance to choose a service provider. We’d love for you to choose Energy Werx SK! Once your application is submitted to us (please be aware that it can take a couple of weeks—we do not get your information immediately!) we will give you a call. If you don’t want to wait for a call, give us a call or use our contact form. However, we cannot move forward with your evaluation until your application has been processed through NRCAN so if you’re reaching out, make sure you have your application number available!

3. Plan your retrofits and get quotes from contractors

Although our energy advisors will provide guidance on the types of retrofits that would be best for your home, we cannot provide recommendations for contractors or service providers.

Note: You cannot ask for a bigger loan if you decide to do more retrofits later, so plan your work before you submit your application.

4. Submit an application to the loan

Log in to your Canada Greener Homes Grant account and click on the button to access the loan portal. You will need to upload the following documents to process the application:

  • Your property tax statement
  • Your driver’s license or other government issued ID together with a utility bill
  • A confirmation of income and employment (for example, a job letter or a T4 slip)
  • Your quotes from the contractors you’ve chosen

The program will calculate the maximum loan amount you are approved for. Don’t forget to accept the loan agreement!

Note: A portion (up to a maximum of 15% of the eligible costs of retrofits requiring an upfront payment) of your loan can be delivered to you up front to pay applicable down payments to contractors. The rest of your loan will not be available until after you have completed the retrofits, submitted your invoices/receipts, and have verified the work done through a post-retrofit evaluation.

5. Complete your retrofits and keep receipts and invoices

Make sure to keep copies of all your receipts and invoices along the way!

6. Get a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

Once the retrofits are done, contact your service provider (Energy Werx SK!) to request a post-retrofit evaluation. The advisor will add the collected information to the grant portal.

Receive your loan amount

Once the work is done, submit your documents to the grant portal. The loan amount will be reviewed based on the actual costs of the completed retrofits.

If the actual costs of the completed retrofits are lower than the initial cost estimates, it will be adjusted downwards.

If the actual costs are higher than the initial cost estimate, it will not increase.

The final amount (less the advance, if you received one), will be deposited into your bank account within 10 days.

7. Repay your loan

You will receive detailed information on the repayment of your loan from NRCAN.
